Our Plants

We grow hard to find and unusual hardy perennials with the needs of wildlife and the planet in mind.

All plants are grown from scratch on site, are peat and pesticide free and use organic methods.

Cirsium heterophyllum – Melancholy Thistle

Clump forming, spreading, herbaceous perennial. Lanceolate green leaves with softly spined edges and white felting beneath. Upright woolly stems carry huge, thistle-like purple-pink, flowers in Summer.

Height & Spread: 1 x 0.5m in 2-5 years.

Hardiness: H7: < -20ºC.

Soil: Any, moist but well-drained to well-drained soil.

Light: Full-sun to Part-shade.

Native Range: UK Native.

CARE & BENEFIT 

Dead-head to encourage repeat flowering. Cut down spent flowering stems and damaged leaves as the new emerge in Spring.

Highly attractive to many pollinators. Foodplant for around 13 UK invertebrates. Seed attractive to birds.
